About Me
A Specialist Funeral Celebrant based in Cornwall
Hello, I’m Kym
Specialist Funeral Celebrant
I’m Kym, a specialist funeral celebrant, here to stand beside you and guide you on your unique journey.
You’ll have seen other celebrants also create ceremonies for baby namings and weddings/hand-fastings; my skills and natural talents lie with funerals and the bereaved, so that is why I dedicate myself to this path.
My journey was not one revelation that catapulted me onto the road of being a funeral celebrant. Instead it was one of gentle nudges here and there until I found myself at your doorstep today.
I had attended a Creating Ceremonies course with the Celebrant and Author Glennie Kindred and found myself co-hosting my father’s funeral following years of deterioration due to Alzheimer’s and Vascular Dementia. It felt strange, to be at peace in the midst of his funeral, but the truth was I felt truly at home and deeply grateful that I could dedicate this part of myself to him.
My Approach & Values
I believe every life deserves to be honoured in a way that feels true and meaningful. My approach is:
Guide
When all you want to do is fall apart, I am here to help you piece it all together. I am that person you can turn to, to guide you in the direction you want to go. I will hold the space so you feel strong enough to do what you need to do.
Informed
Drawing on my MA, my funeral qualifications and experience, and everything in between, I can provide you with the information you need, when you need it. I’m not just a celebrant, I’m a funeral guide.
Personal
Every person is unique; I find creative ways to honour their life, to give space for mourners to reflect, to tailor a service that is deeply personal, not just to the person who has passed but to those who remain. All services are bespoke, written from nothing but a blank page and the story of the life lovingly shared. I’ll never use ‘off the shelf scripts’ or A.I. when writing services.
A Little More About Me
Often, the death of a loved one is the catalyst for movement down this pathway and I was no different. It wasn’t just about creating the ceremony for my father, it was about honouring those left behind too, and helping to hold a sacred space for them to grieve, to share their stories, their laughter, their sadness, their love.
I became a Funeral Arranger and was able to provide a guiding light to those who needed it in a time when they felt lost. No two families are the same, some needed minimal help, while others were terrified to step one foot into the funeral home. During this time the Covid pandemic hit and I witnessed the devastation it caused families, the long term damage of which we are only just beginning to realise.
Never being one for taking an easy life, it was also during this time that I was studying for my Masters in Death, Religion & Culture with the University of Winchester. While working as a Funeral Arranger I also completed my Level 2 BTEC in the Principles of Funeral Operations and Services.
I had moved from Cornwall to Nottingham over 20 years ago and the time had come; I needed to return to my roots, I needed to come home. So I moved back to Cornwall in 2022. There were no Funeral Arranger positions at the time but I worked for a year in the Mortuary at Treliske, assisting with Coroner enquiries, before leaving the service for a time and working for the Mental Health Team. In 2024 I celebrated the publication of a book, ‘Religion, Death and the Senses’, in which I was a contributing author.
The time came when I could step forward into the role I was always meant to hold. I refreshed my training by taking an intense, thorough and amazing journey with Dinah at the Celebrant Coaching & Training Academy, earning my certificate and achieving a Special Commendation.
I’ve walked the road of loss from beginning to end, both personally and professionally. Now I am here to be a quiet companion, guiding others as they navigate their own grief and loss.
Let’s get personal…
When I am not working you’ll find me walking out in the wilds with my partner, Dan. If our dog, Angus, can manage it he’ll be there too! We love to travel, both in the UK and abroad, soaking in a combination of culture and wild adventure. I have visited many ancient monuments in the UK and love to learn about ancient cultures.
I am an active member of the Redruth Writing Group and love to write fiction. Music features heavily in my life and I have eclectic tastes; my favourite film score composer is Hans Zimmer, I love the symphonic metal band Within Temptation and Iron Maiden has grown on me considerably since meeting Dan! I round it off with a healthy dose of 80’s rock that I can sing badly to and many forms of folk which I can dance to (you might see me at a Nos Lowen).
If I am relaxing at home and the weather is good, you will see me pottering in my cottage garden, encouraging wildlife as well as the roses to stay and put down roots.
